I believe everything can be interesting depending on individuals. But, IMHO, there is nothing appropriate to talk with the people you don’t really know.
Place of origin, marital status, career, weather, sexual orientation, none. None will be appropriate because everybody is a little different. Some might get annoyed being asked about their hometown because they just hate their hometown. Some hate their job. Some hate the weather. Some hates anything you would say.
So, just talk whatever you like to talk. If they like it, keep talking. If they hate it, they hate it. Or just don’t say anything at all, like me. Let the other start the topic, and go along. I like any topic. Religion, life, your mother, school, education system, science. I get bored listening to political talks though, but I will still be polite and give you a smile.
Be yourself, whatever it is. But whatever you do, to be or not to be yourself, it’s still you. Because,
“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” (Dr. Seuss)
and of course,
“It’s better to be hated for who you are, than to be loved for someone you’re not. It’s a sign of your worth sometimes, if you’re hated by the right people.” (Bette Davis)
Enough said and quotes, it’s all back to you.
