No country should exist

A little fact about myself

  • Race : Chinese
  • Nationality : Indonesia
  • Country of resident : Malaysia

So, what is patriotism?

I’m a Chinese by race. My ancestors are from China. By tradition, I should devote my life to China. But I can’t. China doesn’t recognize me as a citizen. Nor that I know enough about the modern China to actually love it.

I was born in Indonesia. By law, I’m an Indonesian and I’m obligated to support it. But growing up as a Chinese, I wasn’t well accepted. We lived as an immigrant even though we have the citizenship right. As the result, I don’t feel that it’s my country at all.

That’s why I left my country and venture to a neighboring country called Malaysia. By law, I’m a foreigner here. I don’t have as much right as the citizens. I pay extra for everything. Despite of all, I still need to pay tax.

So tell me, which country should I feel patriotic to? My answer is, none. And all I’m thinking right now is the song from John Lennon “Imagine”.

Imagine there’s no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace…

PS: Today is the independence day of Malaysia.

  1. Thank you for sharing this post. I am similar to you to some extent, with Chinese ancestors, born and grew up in Malaysia but now live overseas. Being Chinese Malaysian, we have to work a lot harder, no subsidy, no free ‘free feed’ to get to where we are compared to the bumiputras and since you now live in Malaysia, I am sure you are aware of this. No matter what, I stay patriotic to my home country, the country I was born in and where I grew up. It is my culture and my heritage.
